This is one of Barbara's most celebrated pieces — and it's easy to see why. Three dark green houses nestle quietly among a grove of white birch trees, their bare branches threading through a sky built entirely from torn and stitched handmade paper in fiery oranges, pinks, and golds. The ground beneath them ripples in deep navy and blue, anchoring the whole luminous scene.
Houses in a Grove of Birch was created using Barbara's handmade paper technique — layers of torn paper, collage, and hand-stitching assembled into a composition that is as tactile as it is beautiful. It went on to win Best of Show at the Glen Arbor Art Center's Made of Paper Juried Exhibition, and earned the Readers' Choice Award in the Made in Michigan Art Contest sponsored by the Grosse Pointe News. Two of the most meaningful recognitions Barbara has received, and two that feel completely right for this piece.
