I create because...
In April the Lakeshore Artists Association will be having an exhibit at the Oliver Art Center in Frankfort called ‘Local Color A To Z.’ Each of us has been asked to create 10 pieces of art! That is a lot of work....even for someone like me, who has time to be in the studio.
As guests walk around, enjoying this exhibit, they will see an artist statement from each of us. We have been asked to begin our statement with the words, “I create because...” This is a wonderfully thought provoking statement isn’t?
Creating for me has alway revolved around making art. My immediate answer to the question today is...because it gives me joy. To experience that feeling of joy, I have had to learn to remove myself from my fears of making mistakes, of comparison to other artists, never achieving perfection and the crippling effects of self criticism. Knowing this, I now understand that, for me, the joy and healing in my creativity comes from the process, not just from the final product.
Here are some opportunities for creating in this month of cabin fever…
February Classes
Foundations of Linocut Printmaking - February 9, 16 and 23
Oliver Center for the Arts, 132 Coast Guard Rd., Frankfort, MI
This is a 3-week class that begins with a brief introduction to printmaking techniques, tools. and surfaces. By the end of the series, all participants will leave with a set of completed prints.
Dates: Mondays, February 9th, 16th, and 23rd
Time: 4:00-6:00pm
Fee: $100 includes all supplies (member discount available)

Finding Your Heart - February 14
Artzmaker Studio, 7775 Sayler Road, Williamsbrug, MI
Have you ever wondered or thought about what your heart might look like? Is it bright, somber in color, textured, bedazzled, quiet, peaceful?
Each participant will create a soft sculpture heart of their own.
Date: February 14th
Time: 10am-12pm
Cost: $50.00 - All materials will be supplied
Limited to 6 participants ~ No skills are needed.
