Courier and Ives is Barbara's tribute to the great tradition of American holiday imagery — and she has packed an entire season into a single painting. At the center, a glowing medallion frames a snow-covered Christmas tree under a night sky full of yellow stars and a crescent moon, red cardinals perched in its branches, a tiny cottage glowing warm at its base, and two bunnies playing in the snow below. Around the medallion, Santa looks on from the left, a dapper snowman in a striped scarf stands watch on the right, and two angels in red fly overhead holding bells and garland. Along the bottom, a whole holiday village stretches from edge to edge — colorful snow-capped houses, evergreen trees, and a horse-drawn sleigh making its way through the snow.
Barbara has always loved creating holiday cards, and this painting is the reason why — she understands instinctively what makes a Christmas image feel like coming home.
