Two red cottages sit quietly among a grove of white birch trees, their warm windows glowing against the lush green canopy. Above it all, a deep pink sky wraps around a spiral sun — layered and luminous, hand-stitched at the edges, built from paper and paint and all the textures Barbara loves to work with. A winding path leads through the trees between the two homes, and tiny pink flowers dot the grass at the base of the birches.
If you spend time with Barbara's work you'll begin to notice something — houses and birch trees appear again and again. They are, in her own words, a repetitive set of images in her work. Not because she runs out of ideas, but because she keeps finding new things to say through them. Two Red Cottages is one of the most luminous versions of that ongoing conversation.
